Health and Safety Induction Video for a Leading Tools Manufacturer and Supplier

Introduction

Sound Idea Digital was commissioned to produce a general health and safety induction video for Gedore Tools, a leading manufacturer and supplier of hand tools, special tools, and customised tools and equipment. The client required a professional video to replace their previous method of delivering safety inductions, which involved a PowerPoint presentation conducted by an induction facilitator. The purpose of the video was to ensure consistent delivery of critical safety information for visitors, contractors, and staff, while reducing logistical demands and associated costs.

Production Overview

The client’s manufacturing facility is located in Durban, necessitating travel to the site for production. To ensure efficiency, our team flew to Durban and arranged accommodation close to the facility to minimise travel time and allow for a smooth production process. The client provided transportation to and from the site, further simplifying logistics.

Initially planned as a two-day shoot, the production was completed in a single day due to the efficient collaboration of our two videographers. By sharing the shot list and working systematically, they were able to capture hundreds of shots required for the video. Completing the shoot in one day not only allowed us to return home the same evening but also reduced the disruption for the client. The safety manager was able to resume normal operations immediately, avoiding the inconvenience of an additional day of filming.

In addition to traditional on-the-ground footage, we used a drone to film aerial shots both inside and outside the plant. This footage highlighted the facility’s operations and gave an overview of the site layout.

Pre-Production and Script Development

The starting point for the project was the client’s existing PowerPoint presentation, which served as the foundation for the script. Working closely with the client, we ensured that the script included all necessary and required safety topics. This collaboration ensured the content was comprehensive and aligned with the specific risks and safety measures relevant to their industry.

The script was designed to communicate important information in a concise and engaging manner, avoiding the drawbacks of a lengthy and text-heavy presentation. The final script was used to develop a detailed shot list, which guided the filming process and ensured every key safety element was filmed.

Industry-Specific Customisation

The client’s work involves designing, producing, and distributing high-quality hand tools, special tools, and custom tool solutions. These processes encompass forging, machining, heat treatment, and surface finishing, each of which presents unique risks such as noise exposure, dust and fumes, chemical exposure, heat and fire hazards, and sharp tools or machinery-related risks.

Recognising the importance of addressing industry-specific safety concerns, we customised the script and visuals to reflect the specific hazards and the required personal protective equipment (PPE). The video included:

  • Ear protection for noise.
  • Respirators or masks for dust and fumes.
  • Heat-resistant gloves for forging and heat treatment.
  • Safety glasses or goggles for grinding and cutting.
  • Steel-toed boots with anti-slip soles for foot protection.

Our experience in producing health and safety videos for a variety of industries also ensured our team was prepared with our own safety boots, adhering to the required safety protocols on site.

Production Outcomes and Benefits

The final deliverable was a seven-minute general health and safety induction video. The video presents the necessary safety information in a consistent and engaging format, eliminating the need for a facilitator to conduct in-person inductions. This approach offers several benefits:

  • Consistency: The video delivers safety information in the same manner every time, reducing the risk of missed or inconsistent messaging.
  • Efficiency: The video removes the logistical and cost burden of coordinating facilitator-led inductions.
  • Attention Retention: The concise format ensures viewers receive critical information without becoming overwhelmed or disengaged.

By incorporating visuals that align directly with the script, the video effectively communicates critical safety protocols while keeping viewers engaged. This streamlined and professional approach enhances the client’s health and safety practices, ensuring all visitors, contractors, and staff are properly informed.
